Liquid metal porous matrix sliding electrical contact: A concept

Concept utilizes porous metal or nonmetal matrix containing liquid metal in porous structure and confines liquid metal to contact area between rotor and brush by capillary forces. System may also be used to lubricate bearing systems

Why use of interventions targeting outdoor biting mosquitoes will be necessary to achieve malaria elimination

    Get PDF
By definition, elimination of malaria means permanent reduction to zero of locally incidence of infections. Achieving this goal among other reasons, it requires fully understanding on where and when persons are most exposed to malaria vectors as these are fundamental for targeting interventions to achieve maximum impact. While elimination can be possible in some settings with low malaria transmission intensity and dominated with late and indoor biting of vectors using Long Lasting Insecticidal Nets (LLIN) and Indoor Residual Spraying (IRs), it’s difficult and even impossible in areas with high and where majority of human exposure to transmission occurs outside human dwellings. Recently in response to wide spread use of LLIN and IRS, human risk of exposure to transmission is increasingly spread across the entire night so that much of it occurs outdoors and before bed time. This modification of vector populations and behaviour has now been reported from across Africa, Asia and from the Solomon Islands. Historical evidence shows that even in areas with intervention coverage exceeding 90% of human population it was so hard to even push prevalence down below the pre elimination threshold of 1% being compromised mainly with the outdoor residual transmission. Malaria control experts must however continue to deliver interventions that tackle indoor transmission but considerable amount of resources that target mosquitoes outside of houses and outside of sleeping hours will therefore be required to sustain and go beyond existing levels of malaria control and achieve elimination

Human serum haptoglobin is toxic to Plasmodium falciparum in vitro

    Get PDF
Innate immune responses are important in the control of malaria, particularly in those who have not yet mounted an effective adaptive response. Here we report that the human serum acute phase protein, haptoglobin is toxic to Plasmodium falciparum cultured in vitro. This effect is phenotype-dependent and occurs during the trophozoite phase of the asexual life cycle. We propose that the increased levels of haptoglobin seen in the acute phase response may be protective against malaria in humans

Integral control of port-Hamiltonian systems: non-passive outputs without coordinate transformation

In this paper we present a method for the addition of integral action to non-passive outputs of a class of port-Hamiltonian systems. The proposed integral controller is a dynamic extension, constructed from the open loop system, such that the closed loop preserves the port-Hamiltonian form. It is shown that the controller is able to reject the effects of both matched and unmatched disturbances, preserving the regulation of the non-passive outputs. Previous solutions to this problem have relied on a change of coordinates whereas the presented solution is developed using the original state vector and, therefore, retains its physical interpretation. In addition, the resulting closed loop dynamics have a natural interpretation as a Control by Interconnection scheme.Comment: 8 pages, 2 figure

The morphology-density relation for dwarf galaxies

    Get PDF
The morphology-density relation is examined for dwarf galaxies with absolute magnitudes -18 less than or equal to M sub B sub T less than or equal to -12.5, based on a deep photographic survey of nearby groups and clusters of galaxies. Results are given. Compared to dwarf ellipticals, dwarf irregulars form a more extended population in nearby clusters, and may in fact be entirely absent from the cluster cores. The spatial distribution of dwarf ellipticals in clusters depends on luminosity and the presence or absence of nucleation. Nucleated dE's and non-nucleated dE's fainter than M sub B sub T approx. -13.5 are concentrated toward the centers of clusters like the giant E and S0 galaxies. In contrast, non-nucleated dE's brighter than M sub B sub T approx. -14.5 are distributed like the spirals and irregulars. The intrinsic shapes of the bright non-nucleated dE's are similar to those of the dwarf irregulars, suggesting a possible evolutionary connection between these two classes of galaxies
